The Gailes Community House in Ipswich is fostering social connections through a weekly cooking group that has been operating for over 20 years. According to ABC News, the group meets every Tuesday morning between 10am and 12pm, transforming the modest dining room into a bustling hub where vegetables are chopped, meals are prepared, and stories are shared.

Janet French, a long-time member of the group, emphasizes the importance of community and connection. Having lived alone for 40 years, she finds solace and joy in the camaraderie of the cooking group, which welcomes individuals regardless of their cooking skills. “You’re not asked to do anything if you don’t want,” French noted, highlighting the inclusive atmosphere that accommodates shy participants.

Donna Baines-Faye, the centre manager, describes the cooking group as more than just a means of providing meals; it serves as a vital platform for social interaction. She noted that for many participants, cooking is a love language, allowing them to connect with others and share their culinary experiences. The group is adept at creating nutritious meals from donated food, showcasing their resourcefulness in the kitchen.

Among the participants is Poutharack Ratsamyvong, a former Buddhist nun who fled Laos and found solace in the cooking group. She credits the community with aiding her healing process, stating that it has become a surrogate family for her in Australia. “The first [volunteer] she asked me ‘you live with whom?’ I said ‘by myself’. She said ‘here is your family. Anything happen to you, you come to this family.’”

The concept of “social prescribing” is gaining traction within the Australian medical community, with increasing recognition of the mental health benefits provided by community programs like the cooking group. Research indicates that individuals participating in social prescribing programs experience enhanced social connections and improved well-being, making initiatives like the Gailes cooking group essential for combating loneliness in the community.
