Michigan State University is increasing the per-meal cost of off-campus dining plans and raising door costs for the upcoming academic year.
Beginning May 4, the cost of off-campus dining hall plans will increase to $10 per meal, a 50 cent increase. The cost of entering the dining halls will be raised to $10 for breakfast and $14 for lunch and dinner.
Since off-campus dining hall plans never expire, the university encouraged students in an email Wednesday morning to purchase as many meals as they want at the current $9.50 per meal rate before the rate change.
Cheryl Berry, the associate director of marketing and communications for MSU Culinary Services, said the increase is the result of inflation in addition to rising fuel costs associated with shipping food to kitchens.
“It’s not something we want to do, but in order to keep our team working and to provide the kind of services and the food that we do, that’s where we’re at,” said Berry.
She emphasized that Culinary Services has been doing its best to absorb rising food costs as long as they could, but they have now gone up substantially.
Berry said there should be no other dining plan price changes in the near future.
The cost of off-campus meal plans had already increased by 50 cents in 2025, which the university attributed to inflation.
