France considers the US threats to impose tariffs on wine unacceptable.
Donald Trump threatened to impose 200% tariffs on French wine and champagne because of France’s intention to reject the US leader’s invitation to join his “Peace Council.”
The council was created to oversee the reconstruction of war-torn Gaza, but its charter does not appear to limit its role to the occupied Palestinian territory.
“I will impose 200 percent tariffs on his wines and champagne. And he will join. But he doesn’t have to join,” Trump said, referring to French President Emmanuel Macron.
A source close to Macron told AFP that France “does not intend to respond positively” to the invitation.
The council’s charter “goes beyond the scope of Gaza alone,” said the source close to the French president.
“Threats of tariffs aimed at influencing our foreign policy are unacceptable and ineffective,” he added.
Trump confirmed that he had invited his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to join the Peace Council after Moscow earlier announced the invitation.
“Yes, he has been invited,” Trump told a reporter in Florida who asked him if he had invited Putin to join the council. | BGNES
