Bought this yesterday and have been enjoying it slowly over the weekend. I don’t see much Franconian wine here, so I thought it would be neat to share.
Horst Sauer is one of the most well-respected producers in Franconia. This one is a site specific erste Lage (Akin maybe to a 1er cru) near the city of Volkach.
I am not nearly as versed or experienced in wine as some in this community, but in my books this is easily a 9 or 9.5 out of 10, and arguably the most memorable Silvaner I’ve had so far.
Pale straw in color and boasting a beautiful effervescence that is followed by intense notes of melon and peaches. Well endowed at 13%ABV and a with a strong finish.
My only concern is it’s sensitivity to temperature, but I figure the same happens with many other white wines. Too cold and it’s gonna feel kinda earthy and vegetable. To warm and it’s minerality will shine, giving it a saline taste that I am not a huge fan of.
I’ve been enjoying this solo, but I can imagine it would pair well with a herbal chicken dish or asparagus as is usually done in the region.
