I’ve talked about [these products](https://www.stonewallkitchen.com/campaign-landing-pages/plant-based-meatless-mixes/plantbasedmeatlessmixes.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjw1vSZBhDuARIsAKZlijQqS8K5j8anOryYrAydxJ5tO5SV3FGHRVTNJUAQpsZkPBayj6GjHOwaAhwdEALw_wcB) before: the Korean BBQ is my favorite, the street taco and morning wrap mixes are good too, the sloppy Joe and chili mixes not so much, but when I was shopping a sale on Stonewall and stocking up on seasonings I saw the new [red sauce mix](https://www.stonewallkitchen.com/plant-based-red-sauce-mix-370307.html) and had to grab a packet. I finally got to try it last night, and I did make some tweaks I’ll outline in a moment, but even though I was a bit hesitant about the texture when I added the tomato sauce and stirred it up, it came out great! It also yields a ton of sauce, I cooked an entire box of spaghetti and it ended up being a near perfect ratio, my husband and I have a ton of leftovers for lunches.

The packet suggests you add one onion and one bell pepper – honestly, I’m not a big fan of cooked peppers even when they’re chopped up into little pieces, so I omitted that but did use the onion. I added a small head of garlic, more pepper flakes, basil, and some Penzey’s pasta sprinkle (even though the mix does come with a good amount of flavor already). I did follow the suggestion to add some pasta water, that was a good call. The result was delicious! I’m definitely buying more packets next time they have a sale.

I also appreciate that there’s no fat or cholesterol – I mean, you *do* cook it with a few tablespoons of oil, but still, the mix itself doesn’t have that stuff like meat or even most meat substitutes tend to have. And it’s much less calorie dense than Beyond or Impossible meat as well. It *is* high in sodium, but I’m willing to overlook that.
