According to Wikipedia the top two theories are:

* It was developed from a local tradition of rolling cooked rice and side dishes in seaweed (according to the Encyclopedia of Korean Culture). There is an additional theory that kimbap was introduced to Japan and that developed into norimaki/sushi.
* It was developed from a Japanese variant of sushi during the Japanese occupation of Korea.

I am interested to hear what people have heard or if you have ideas on finding more specific information/research/literature!

If you think kimbap didn’t come from makizushi you’re deluding yourself. There is always some Korean population arguing we didn’t get something from Japan even though it’s totally obvious.

You wouldn’t believe the amount of things that seem quintessentially Korean that was not a significant part of Korean culture at all before occupation. One that blew my mind is the use of anchovy.
