after buying a mini crockpot, I realized I’m not actually the best cook. but this pot roast is my first successful dish!

I bet it was delicious. But a little advice – herbs are your friend. Maybe chuck in a bay leaf or two.

Try adding less liquid.

I love making this. If you ever end up making it too salty, add more potatoes. It helps suck up the salt. Looks yummy

You don’t have to be Gordon Ramsay or even make stuff to impress redditors really. As long as you are cooking for yourself and making food you can eat, you are doing well. Better than a lot of people. And with practice, you cannot help but get better.

Write down what you did! And keep a file of your repertoire…. Often, I’ll want to make something I’ve never made, and what I find online is only the starting place. Naturally you vary the recipe (1 C onion? Nah, just one whole onion… simpler). Over time you have lots of things you can make when you can’t think what you want, and tailored to how you like to make them.

Most people who say they can’t cook, could cook, if they learned how to follow directions. For most recipes especially for slow cooking, the recipes are pretty simple. As long as you can chop a vegetable with a knife and know how to measure with measuring cups and spoons, that’s typically all you need.
For some reason, people who “can’t cook” always think they are smarter than the recipe. Here are some examples:
Recipe calls for a chuck roast?
“Top round was on sale so I got that instead”
Recipe says sear the meat in a pan before adding to the slow cooker?
“Naw I don’t have time for that, it’s going to col a long time anyway.”
Recipe says use tomato paste?
“Tomato sauce is cheaper and it’s basically the same thing.”
Recipe says use garlic powder?
“I’ve got garlic salt, close enough.”
Recipe calls for carrots, celery, and onion?
“I really like mushrooms so I am going to add that too.”
Recipe says cook on low for 8 hours?
“It’s noon and I want to eat at 5 so I’m only going to cook it for 5 hours, that should be plenty of time”
“Man this sucks, I’m a terrible cook”
You’re a terrible cook because you can’t follow directions. Follow the recipe exactly, and you will be surprised by the results.
