This recipe comes from the Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook – probably the gold standard cook book of all families through most of the 20th century in the USA. I included the recipe as one of the pics in the OP. If it has to be included in the comments, I can do so.
Some follow up tips that you won’t see in the recipe. Make sure you have the milk in the saucepan at the start and don’t pour it in while the sugar and cornstarch (cocoa powder too if making chocolate pudding) is alone on medium heat. Especially if you choose to make chocolate pudding, use a whisk to stir the ingredients and whisk vigorously to break up all of the cocoa powder. Not nearly as critical when making vanilla pudding. Finally, get your butter out ahead of time so that it is thoroughly softened before adding it at the end.

Comments on the budget appropriateness to make pudding at home. The pudding was made as a means of not wasting the yolks since these were the byproduct of another recipe that required only egg whites. My wife made an Angel food cake so we had to separate eggs. Eggs are expensive in today’s world due to avian flu (I think) so if you can use a different recipe to utilize the rest of the egg that’s not needed for your original recipe is a bonus.
Vanilla pudding is cheaper than the chocolate since you don’t need to add cocoa powder.

Homemade pudding is the best. My mom used to make it when I was a kid, with nice cold whipped cream on top! I haven’t had it in forever. Saving to make for my kids.
