Early spring grass can be used to heat up compost piles that have become cold. The addition of grass adds heat, quickens decay, add nitrogen, and brings completed compost to your garden more quickly.

  2. Hi. Thanks for the video. Can you tell how you move it from the fencing bin to the pallets, what stage? Also is there an order? I see you have several pallet bins. How did you make the pallet bins? Do you need the top cover on the pallet bins? Thanks, you're awesome!

  3. I love the rare video that tells me to do exactly what I just did. Usually I do something and then learn I did it wrong lol

  4. I can often get fully composted leaf mould if temps don't fall too low & I remember to apply urine before a few warm days. You have to pay attention to the weather. When I bothered to decomp in leaves in heavy mill contractor bags, it almost always worked. Just poured in urine through one of the vent holes with a funnel.

  5. The snow and ice recently melted after 3 months, so, late yesterday was my first time adding to my compost pile. I was getting ready to turn it and discovered a mound of black gold under the top 6 inches. It's snowing all day today so I'll have to wait until this melts to check out that pile. Dang. It's encouraging!

  6. That much grass will go anaerobic quickly if not turned soon. It will smell like ammonia and get slimy. If you're going to add that much grass just mix it thoroughly with the leaves and go hot compost. Either hot or cold….

  7. Gary, did you shred the leaves with your mower or just rake and pile? I am building my pen tomorrow. Going to the woods before the ticks come and gather some leaves. Good video, as always!🙂

  8. My secret weapon: spent grains left over from brewing. Mixed with browns, they start composting as soon as I have a couple sunny days in a row above freezing. It'll keep going even if it drops below freezing. Mine started up last week and it's been going strong despite overnight lows as far down as -14C (7F).

  9. Don't worry about people getting sick of compost videos! Especially each time you have an additional tip for us. I appreciate seeing and hearing information more than once. It help me remember the information, it serves as a reminder to get things done, and it seems I always learn something new, see it a different way, or think of new ideas as to how I might try what's in the video. Today it was green grass in the pile, and how and why to do it. I very much appreciate it, and I think a lot of other do also.

  10. Making your own compost will become more and more important as persistent herbicides like Grazon get into commercial compost. I've known several people who topped their beds with manure-based compost and the herbicide ruined their garden 😟

  11. Can the same heat be generated by food scraps? We generally have about a gallon daily of fruit and vegetable scraps plus coffee grounds and tea.
We have plenty of oak tree leaves, but not much grass clippings as we live in a wooded area.

  12. i just received a load of fresh wood chips. Can i use alfalfa pellets for the greens, until we start mowing of course, and can i use LABs to help speed up the composting process? And how long should it take to make a compost that i can use in my garden?

  13. You can also go to the local coffee shop and get some used coffee grounds to mix into the pile. Warms up fast and breaks down quick.
