I’ve been lurking for a few months on this sun, lots of cool info/people. I’ve really taken a liking to Riesling so I wanted to try my first wine review for a couple cheaper ones as I work my way up to some of the nicer bottles I’ve accumulated. I’d like to write out my thoughts as I develop a my taste profile and share it to see if I’m looking for the right things or if I’m way off the mark. Try not to cringe too hard 😛

First one is this Sturmwolken 2020 from the Pfalz region, picked up at a local polish corner store because the bottle looked cool :

👁️: light straw yellow, very little color

👃: citric peels and maybe a tiny bit of petrol and a noticeable rubbing alcohol smellNot much going on here, not particularly pleasant

👅 relatively dry, some bit of sweetness but is drowned out by a lot of general acidity, mostly lime and lime rinds. Tiny bit of mineral flavors maybe a little saline on the finish.

Overall; not terrible, not particularly pleasant either though. Flavor is simple and acid heavy which I don’t mind, but is a little ruined by harsh unpleasant alcohol finish that I can’t describe as anything other than a milder version of that feeling you get when taking a shot. I’m wondering if the bottle was compromised somehow.

Second one I cracked to compare was this Dr. L 2021 from Dr. Loosen. I purchased some dry versions and a few other more expensive versions to try as a later date, but thought this was a good entry level to taste first:

👁️: still pale yellow but a little bit darker color than the first Riesling.

👃: more pronounced gasoline aromas than the first one. Maybe some slight peach blossom aromas too

👅: far more concentrated in flavor than the first wine. Same limey acidity, but balanced with more sugar for sure. No harsh aftertaste like the first wine. I taste lime, peach, and some gentle rocky slate flavors. Not super complex but very pleasant and drinkable. Far better than the first IMO, perhaps it’s the lower ABV but I think it’s just higher quality as I usually don’t prefer things just because they are sweeter.

Anyways, that’s all I’ve got. Looking forward to cracking the nicer Dr L. Next week. Thanks for listening to me make a fool of myself as a wine rater.

Cheers
