Just discovering the cheapest Toronto restaurant menu I think I’ve ever seen @ Gale’s Snack Bar – cash only spot in Leslieville just south of Queen & Carlaw – has anyone been/eaten?

I drive by here all the time and always wonder if it’s open. I heard they have the cheapest fish and chips in the city (or used to have)

Yes! i have been. It’s kind of a legend. But it’s just one woman doing everything from cooking to serving to running the cash register. So be prepared to wait and wait. She works quickly but she is all by herself! The food is fine. Nothing to get excited about, other than the fact it is amazingly cheap.

Wow…those prices! I want to go there and try their hot hamburger.

    It’s for homeless people

Like actually, and I mean this as a positive. there is nothing there for most

Yeah this place is legit. Food is good. BYO sanitizer.

They roast their own turkey for the Club sandwich and hot turkey (at least they used to years ago) so at least for some items the quality is there even though it’s cheap. Other things are what you’d expect, like the fries are just reheated frozen grocery store brand. For the price it’s definitely amazing, and it’s awesome they haven’t massively increased prices like everywhere else these days, especially considering their food costs have likely gone up a lot. I honestly don’t know how they’re not hemorrhaging money, a lot of the ingredients cost more than that what they’re charging for an entire sandwich, the last time I bought a can of sardines or salmon it was over $3, and they’re charging two bucks for a sandwich and still paying for property taxes and utilities? I need to know their secret.

  7. This place is fun to check out the vibe but the food is about as good as one would expect, given the prices. For example, when I was there, someone ordered a burger and the patty was extracted from a family size no-name frozen burger box.

WTF! This is the best thing ever.

I’d like to think that some mega rich guy, like Kevin O’Leary, is behind it and is supplementing the cost just for fun.

But then I remembered, Kevin O’Leary is a cunt.

When I was a bike messenger I ‘loved’ this place. Because of the charm and price point. Then I’d slowly have a panic attack as deadlines approached and I still hadn’t gotten my lunch.

I feel like they’d get more business if it looked like it was open, but then it wouldn’t be what it is.

Also, there’s the legend re: HA paying them to lock the prices where they’re at.

Lol I have driven by many times and thought it was closed down. Maybe they should raise the prices and fix their sign. Looks like such a dirty hole in the wall place

Wow, Gale’s is still open! And still very reasonably priced. Definitely a TO gem.

That place is actually open? Every time I drive by the curtains are drawn and it looks kinda run down

  13. sassyassy23

Yes I have been there but not for many years. It is nothing amazing.

I’ve been there it’s worth it just for the trip back in time. Another place in the east end with non updated pricing worth visiting is Square Boy.

Food tastes like shit but it is a legendary spot for sure

Omg. I used to go there as a kid! Thanks for the memory 😊

Went plenty of times pre-lockdown but haven’t been since. Hope it’s still killin!

  20. I lived 4 blocks away for 12 years and never ate there. What’s the point when it’s all stuff you can make yourself easily? But I don’t find cooking to be a chore.

  21. Place is lit used to go their as a kid didn’t she still open 🔥🔥

This menu has not changed since I started going here in the early 1990s. Best club sandwich on Eastern Ave. The prices have gone up a tiny amount since then, like barely risen! Amazing find.

With today’s gas & grocery prices It might be cheaper for me to drive from Ottawa to this food truck to eat lol 😂

There’s gotta be a time portal to 1963 in the back right? That’s how they keep the prices low?
