R19 Cali-Mex closed permanently up in Lakeway, anyone know what happened? I feel like I was just there 2 weeks ago.

The owner said they just weren’t doing well enough to stay open. Unfortunately.

Y’all should try tacos 620 off RR222 and 620 they have breakfast tacos and they are yummy 😋. It’s a red trailer parked on a storage place and they are drive- Thru so you should got off the car

From the Lakeway Broadcast group on FB (12/06/22):

“It is with a broken heart that I have to let all our TacoLovers know that I will be closing R19 Taqueria at the end of the month.

Unfortunately we aren’t receiving the traffic and sales needed to offset the rising prices of commodities and high labor expenses.

It has been my honor to serve our community and be a part of if for the past year. Thank You for the amazing memories.

I have adjusted hours based on the limited staff I have and we will do our best to take care of everyone as quickly as we can.

Please come by for one last 🌮 or 🌯 and say hello/goodbye.

    With much admiration,

    -Christopher Haydostian
    Chef/Owner”

I mean I was pretty sure they were doomed the moment I saw the menu when they first opened. Their business model just wouldn’t work at this location. Selling $6-8 “California-style” tacos within the vicinity of 5+ already-established taco joints is just not a good move. Especially in a place like Lakeway, where word-of-mouth travels quite slow. Also, the Owner’s anti-mask rants on Nextdoor likely burned bridges with the type of customer that would frequent this kind of restaurant.

Lakeway is a very difficult place to open a restaurant. This place replaced a Greek place that was amazing. All of the hillbillies living here get so excited when a new restaurant opens, but it always dies off shortly after. A restaurant that puts californnnnnnnia, in the name, isn’t going to get loyalty from these trumpstains. Labor is horrible, because no affordable housing and no public transportation. The insurrectionists who used to protest at Insurrection point down the way haven’t rallied in months. I’d assume they would get hungry from all of that flag waving and treason and keep businesses nearby busy. Anyway, it’s a terrible place to risk a business. If you’re going to do it, risk the barn, not the whole house. RIP, R19
