  1. Id say the biggest difference in breakfast tacos in the two cities is San Antonio mostly uses tortillas made “in house”. There are some places in Austin that make their own. But in San Antonio it’s not really a thing to use pre-made tortillas, unless you go to a place where tacos really isn’t their main thing, like Bill Miller BBQ.

Not to say that Austin tacos are bad, but I’d say the tortilla is the biggest difference

But everyone like what they like. I don’t think the two cities will see eye to eye on it.

There’s no competition. San Antonio has killer breakfast tacos in every neighborhood and for a fraction of the cost of anything up here in Austin. You can definitely get bad ass breakfast tacos in Austin, but you’re gonna have to go find them and pay twice as much.

Here’s the thing, for most Texas trends in the last 10 years Austin is the city that put it on the map. For outsiders trying to catch the vibe this is how it works:
    Topo Chico, that’s Austin.
    Texas bbq, that’s Austin.
    Breakfast tacos, that’s Austin.
Convert houses to bars with a backyard and a food truck- that’s Austin.
San Antonio was doin this shit but they didn’t get the credit. Now they’re trying to get a slice of that pie.

Austin is a caricature now. It’s not what it was but developed into some surreal, dystopian caricature. Private, member only clubs, lines for everything, live music where no one watches the band, $20 drinks, and store bought tortillas.

  5. Best part about Austin breakfast tacos is not having to eat them in San Antonio.

  6. only in the minds of people who moved to Austin in the last couple decades…

I say this every time this topic comes up, the further south you drive in Texas, the better the breakfast tacos.

This comes up every few months and it always goes the same way:

*someone*: San Antonio has better breakfast tacos than Austin

*someone else*: oooh, Austin, what do you say to *that*?

*austin*: um, obviously. Was this in question?

I guess if you don’t live near Marcelino’s you may think Austin is missing out

I think it is a manufactured rivalry. As the article points out, Austin is great at branding. As a native Austinite, I would offer the criticism that Austinites (natives & transplants) often think we are the center of the universe. So I seriously doubt most San Antonians think about how their city is better than Austin, but I do believe their are Austinites who think about how our city is better than everywhere else.
