Just wanted to share with you all my recent love affair with the Daybird chicken sando. I’ve tried a lot of chicken sandwiches in my day (Howlin rays is good yes!), but recently this has been my favourite. The sophisticated spice flavor (sichuan/mala) is just incredible, it’s not too overpowering, but packs enough of a punch to keep things interesting. And the slaw? Oh man, the slaw is a game-changer. It has a refreshing taste that sets it apart from any other sandwich I’ve tried. It’s the perfect balance of crunch and tanginess that really elevates the whole sandwich to another level.

If you haven’t tried the Daybird chicken sandwich yet, I highly recommend it. Not sure why it is not really popular.

Daybird.. champion of the night bird… Ruler of the sun….

This isn’t a hot take. It’s just a fact. (Unless you mean hot in a spicy way, then in that case, go off.)

It’s really damn good, but I give the win to Howlin Rays

Heard a lot of things about this place but will it satisfy my spice level 🧐.

  6. ockaners

It would have been a hot take last year lol

  7. I think go go bird has the best chicken sandwich, but I also haven’t tried this one so I guess I gotta

The whole concept is so awesome if you want different flavors than Nashville hot chicken. The sauces and the pickles with ginger are amazing.

And I think quality wise as far as the chicken is concerned it’s on par with Howlin Rays, whose chicken is obviously superior to all of the other Nashville hot chicken places I’ve tried. Daybird uses dark meat I think, which is so juicy and soooo good

    Hope they stick around

  9. hernjoshie

They are like the only place that uses dark meat chicken instead of breast for their sandwiches. That alone makes for a vastly more flavorful sandwich.

Mee dee Thai Kitchen is a contender. Their green chicken green curry sando is bomb

  11. Hot take: that thing where people call a sandwich a “sando”, I immediately disregard and discredit all thoughts that person has to offer on anything whatsoever. You want to play the “hot take” game? That’s what you get back.

  12. The chicken itself is good, but the sandwich as a whole is dry. Why they don’t add any sauce in that jawn is beyond me. They can’t just rely on the slaw. I’ve had the sandwich multiple times hoping for a better outcome.

That said, Howlin Ray’s still holds the crown. But Daybird is a great alternative.

  13. SLWoodster

Agreed. Daybird really is the best. But i think their tenders are so far off from their sandos.

    Nashville Hot – Howlin Rays.

    Less line – Rockbird

Just want to throw Chimmelier out there as a name. Had one of their sandwiches at Smorgasburg today and it blew Howlin out of the water. Maybe not on spice, but on quality of sandwich? Hell yeah.

Looks like a sandwich with a side of fried chicken. Do they make one with smaller piece of chicken? Call me crazy haha.

    I like Birdies a lot.

  16. Amazing-Bag

How do you eat that? Is there chicken already in the bun or do you have to open it to stuff the chicken back in the sammich

  17. maybeiamonreddit

    For a second I thought this was a poodle/labradoodle

I love the crispiness and texture and how damn hot their sandwiches are, but the flavor just isn’t for my palette, apparently. I’ve tried multiple times and I respect it, and I wish it spoke to me more

  19. How long is the wait to get a sandwich? Is it anything like Howlin in terms of wait times? Thank you.

Best chicken sandwich goes to Le Coupe. Best *Hot chicken sandwich goes to Howlin Rays

God, what world are we living in that I see a sandwich or burger for $15 and immediately wonder if it comes with a side. Ugh!

I have tried many a chicken sandwich from Nashville to Tokyo. The only ones I’ve really enjoyed were ones where the chicken is more like a compressed patty, kind of like a big chicken katsu. The sandwiches that just use a piece of fried chicken seem like a waste to me, like why not just eat fried chicken? Is there something I’m missing?

  23. Searchingtheseas

Think it’s the only hot chicken sandwich that can compete with Howlin, but I still give the win to Howlin. Main Chick is a damn good hot chicken sandwich too- they use hawaiian buns for their sliders which gives it a really unique sweet taste.

That’s just Fried Chicken with a bun on it

Gotta try them I usually go to THE KLUCKIN CHICKEN on melrose and western or STARKS HOT CHICKEN on Vermont and 3rd. I’ve been going there for years there both delicious af!

  26. We recently tried Howlin Rays and Daybird’s sandwiches back-to-back (10 mins travel time in between). We ordered medium spicy for both. Howlin’s chicken was fried to perfection, keeping the breast meat really juicy which is harder to achieve. The breading was evenly distributed with the right amount of thickness. For us, the flavours are primarily saltiness and spiciness, we couldn’t really taste anything else. The slaw in our sandwich was drowned in dressing. Daybird’s breading was a lot thicker and has more crusty bits (we couldn’t agree if this was a good or bad thing). The flavour of its seasoning was so well-balanced and has depth. The slaw was surprisingly refreshing with ingredients that we didn’t expect in slaws. We really liked that you don’t need overflowing sauces/dressing to enjoy it because the chicken / its seasoning and the slaw worked its magic. It is a really well constructed fried chicken sandwich and is now our favourite.
