[The article](https://www.bonappetit.com/story/restaurant-check-fees-explained?utm_social-type=owned&utm_source=twitter&mbid=social_twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_brand=ba) begins with Pija Palace’s 19% service fee. Such bullshit. And I’m calling out their staff that no way in hell are they okay paying a 40% surcharge on dining out even as they virtue signal that everyone else should be doing this.

I don’t get the arguement, if the service charge is to pay the service staff a living wage and provide health insurance, why should I still be tipping?
No thank you. I just don’t go to restaurants with service charges. If your prices are 19% higher than what’s printed on the menus, reprint the menus.
This is what they call a “hate click”
Over the last month or so, I am now asking to have any extra charges removed from the bill. I mean all of them. I tip 20-25% (tip more for breakfast). I am not paying a 3% health fee that is never actually given to the staff or a 5% this fee
No the fuck you shouldn’t.
Is it listed on the menu? If not it is illegal
I don’t think you finished reading it, it says in big bold header text:
“If a restaurant is “tip-free” or “tip-included,” there’s usually an 18–22% tip factored into the price of each dish. Additional tipping is (probably) not expected.”
Then says:
“If there’s an “employee benefits” or “pay equity” fee on your check, tipping is probably still expected. These fees are usually 3–5%, but sometimes go higher.”
Matches with what I typically do/see. If theres a 3% charge, I still tip. If there’s a 20% charge, I don’t tip (unless something special happened)
“However a restaurant decides to structure its pay, you as the diner should trust what they’re doing. It’s insane to think you can go into dinner and walk away understanding the intricacies of running a business.”
trust the experts, prole
Reminds me of when I made the mistake of not reading the receipt at Jon and Vinny’s when I was out with friends; added a 20% tip on top of the 18% that I was already charged. I was a very generous customer that evening. 🫠
This is why I love Japan, just one price and that’s it
