I got this brochure from local Total Wines and have few questions

1. Why is there no wine location in Asia. Doesn’t Asia have grapes or fermentation environment.

2. It says, for ex, Tuscany has cherries and plums notes in their wines. Are these artificially added or just how nature makes them ?

3. Can some one dumb it down what’s the meaning of bolder tannins, softer tannins and smooth tannins.

4. If you drink a wine are you able to easily tell if tannins are smooth or bold. Or if there are cherry and plum notes ?

Thanks for helping a newbie

  1. 1. This is only showing where Cabernet Sauvignon is grown. That said, there isn’t a lot of wine production in east Asia. There’s some in western/central Asia like Turkey and Kazakhstan, but they’re not widely sold in the US. I’ve had one wine from India, it was okay. China actually produces a fair amount for domestic consumption, but only recently have they started producing wine that’s actually good enough to export.

    2. They’re just describing the aromas and flavors. There aren’t actually any fruits other than grapes in it.

    3. Tannins are the component in wine that create a very astringent/drying feeling in your mouth. Soft/smooth tannins would be barely noticeable. Bold tannins would be more noticeable, possibly unpleasant if you’re not used to it.

    4. Tannins are one of the easier components of wine to identify because it’s more of a feeling than a flavor. Picking out individual fruit notes takes a little more practice.
