Noob question: Does straight sugarcane actually taste like sugar? Like, is this just thick, sweet grass?

I know a place that has these as a stirrer in mojitios. So brilliant.

as someone who is a native to the Caribbean. One of the most refreshing things to eat a hot day just lounging around with either family or friends is some sugarcane. I usually put lime and chilli 🌶 on mine too.

I suck at peeling it though lol

There’s another poster on this sub who always posts Ghanaian food. I’m looking forward to seeing more Nigerian chop for the purposes of friendly rivalry!

If the sugarcane is not peeled, you have to peel the outer layer with your teeth…bite a bit at the top of the cane and then peel the outer layer like a bamboo strip. And then chew on the cane. Absolutely delicious…not too sweet. The downside is if you are not careful you can cut the sides of your mouth. The cane in this picture has been peeled.

In an alternate universe where humans are kept as pets by a more superior species, they probably give it to us as “treats”.

Put it through a ringer and pour the juices over ice👍👌

Can confirm, movie theater in South East Asia sell this alongside with all the treats

When I was a kid me and my brothers used to get a cane and split it between us from my dads garden. It grew remarkably well where we lived in the high desert in California. They were real sweet

This is too easily peeled and given, we eat with the outer covering.
