This is a little secret menu item I learned about through this Reddit sub, so I figured I’d give my review.

To explain what this is… it’s a Homeslice Italian sub, wrapped inside a calzone.

First, it should be known it seems like it’s sort of a pain for the restaurant to make it. I brought it up and the waiter was super excited that someone knew about this, however, he did have to check with the kitchen to see if they had time to make it. Give yourself about 45 min for this thing to come out the oven

With that said, I was super excited to try this and when it arrived to the table, it was pretty awe-inspiring. The pic above doesn’t do it justice for the size of this thing.

Now, onto the taste. There’s no question this thing is good. I’m pretty sure they put some ricotta or other cheese inside the calzone, so it’s more than just the calzone bread engulfing the sub. Everything is hot, gooey, and very tasty.

Should you try it — yes.

Would I order it again? — prob not.

The only reason why not is because you’re really messing with the perfection that is their traditional Italian sub. I had heard it’s the best in the city by many people, and once I finally tried it, I have to confirm it’s the best I’ve ever had. a friend I was with yesterday also orders the original Italian sub and said its the best he’s ever had.

My favorite part of an Italian sub is how the warm bread and meat come together with the cold tomatoes and shredded lettuce with the tang of the dressing. This is what you lose with The Vatican. Since everything get cooked in the oven together, everything is warm and you don’t get that clash of hot and cold.

The Vatican was $28

For the experience – it was worth every penny. Try it on a slower day where the kitchen isn’t overrun.

Nice! It’s definitely an ordeal, as they need the base 10 minutes for the cold sub order and then 15 for the calzone itself…but an experience nonetheless. Glad you enjoyed it!

Ricotta cheese sounds delicious, but I agree I would miss their amazing bread and the condiments (even the mayo I guess) really make the sandwich great too.

WAIT, there is **bread inside the Calzone**. Whoa
