My wife and I had these incredible fried fish tacos in Mexico 2 years ago and are looking for some recommendations for spots we can find great fried fish tacos in Chicago. What are you favorites?

I don’t have a favorite yet but I can tell you that I HATED the fish tacos at Tuco & blondie in Lakeview. Bland and mushy.

Don Pez in Lincoln Park. Also recommend their ceviche – everything there is delicious and the owner is super nice

I like the fish taco at lonesome rose but do recognize in the universe of fish tacos it’s like a soft 7

  4. I don’t typically recommend Big Star in Wicker for anything other than the generous amount of alcohol their margaritas have but I do think they had some of the best deep fried fish tacos. But admittedly i have not been there in a while so I can’t say if their fish tacos are still good or if their margarita pitcher still has a good amount of alcohol.

I had the fish tacos from Rockwell’s Neighborhood Grill last week and they were really good. Probably could have split the dish between 2 people because it was very filling.

Spent a lot of time in San Diego as a kid, and weirdly enough Cleos (the 4am soccer bar) is the only spot I’ve found with good San Diego/Tijuana style fish tacos.

Ravinia Brewing in Logandale (Logan Square/Avondale).

Though I did see they got a new chef and the menu is going to be changing, so not sure if that means the tacos are leaving or not.

I hate to say it, but Mixteco actually has real good fish and shrimp tacos. Atleast the one by me in Lakeview does

Big and Littles. Always Big and Littles

Edgewater Tacos is maybe the best fish taco I’ve had in a minute.

    El Cid in Logan Square

    El Barco Mariscos on Ashland

  12. milkymilkmilk

Tacos Lotería in Logan Square has some decent ones.

Honestly really like those at The Harding Tavern, and they’re really affordable too

  14. Not purely Mexican but the fish tacos at Del Seoul are pretty fucking good. Get a couple of those, a Chile shrimp, and some of their fries and you’re in heaven.

  15. I love the fish tacos at Del Seoul in Lincoln Park (Clark & Wrightwood) – all of their food is good

It’s practically Lincolnwood, but El Carrito at Petersen/Lincoln has never let me down. Used to have a $9.99 2 tacos + rice & beans lunch special, but I haven’t gone in a while.

no one here mentioning antique taco??

Del Seoul in Lincoln Park is amazing. I always forget how good it is. The shrimp and fish tacos are my fav in the city.

  19. Woke_Almond

Big Star and Lonesome Rose are very unoriginal recommendations and def not my fav Mexican restaurants, but they both do an excellent fried fish taco

I really like the fish taco at Taco Maya. Got a few locations around the city. Plus buy 2 get 1 free deal on Tuesdays.

Taco & Burrito House on Broadway

    LP’s Tap House

  22. ShortGlassOfWater312

La Luna has some of the best fish tacos that I’ve had in the city, they put this amazing salsa macha on them that’s to die for

  23. Lonesome rose has a delicious fish taco (Logan and newly opened Andersonville)

A huge thank you to everyone for these great recommendations! We’re looking forward to trying each place, and for the sake of giving back, we’ll capture some footage and share our rankings back here

I live in the burbs now but I still make it to Edgewater Tacos a few times a year for their fish tacos bc they are really THAT good.

  26. blackliquordrinkin

My favorite fish taco is at takito kitchen!! All of their tacos / food is amazing too

  27. fiveonionsandwiches

Probably in the minority here but I prefer the fish in my tacos not-fried. Primo Chukis does theirs with tilapia cooked on the flat top and onions/cilantro on corn tortillas. Simple preparation that can be doused in salsa and is very delicious.

  28. grrrrofthejungle

Edgewater tacos is good. Also surprisingly decent battered fish tacos at the Davis Theater in Lincoln Square (you can get dinner delivered to your seat while watching a movie!).

Not battered, but I also love the fish tacos at South of the Border in Rogers park, with the added attraction of excellent, large, affordable margaritas and late night hours.

It was Taco Joint, but they closed. Big and Littles is good. And Ravinia Brewery on Diversey has good fried fish tacos.

  30. Plastic-Profile-8481

Antique taco’s fish tacos are really interesting. They do this smoked cabbage on them that taste unlike anything I’ve ever had. Def recommend them if you haven’t had them.

  31. OpeningVolume1270

The Oaxaca fish tacos at Xoco are fire

  32. Ravinia brewing on diversey has bomb fish tacos

  33. RowOrWade

Taqueria Traspasada 2 on chicago and ashland. I think it’s actually grilled because there’s no breading. comes with a lil bit of salsa macha.
