In today’s 2 minute garden tip, I discuss a common fertilizer mistake that may be ruining your garden’s productivity. When fertilizing your garden, it is important to choose the correct fertilizers with the right balance of nutrients to support the type of plant you’re growing. Failure to apply the correct fertilizers can result in poor growth, lack of flowering and poor fruit production. Many gardeners see poor results due to improper fertilizing.

Fertilizers predominantly consist of three macro-nutrients: Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K). These three elements make up the N-P-K ratio, which are the percentages by weight of each macro-nutrient found in the fertilizer. These macro-nutrients have different effects on the plant, and the NPK ratio can determine whether plants dedicate most of their energy to leafy green growth, flowers and fruiting, or root growth. Pair the proper fertilizer with the proper plants at the proper time or you can see reduced harvests.

  1. Don’t forget to put the Epsom salts on the tomato and peppers. Another thing you don’t know is you just don’t ferterlize any time after you plant is a good time and then wait for the buds to form after flowering then hit them with fertilizer again . The mistake people make is to fertilize to soon , when this happens the plant will make a lot of foliage and no fruit .

  2. Stop using miracle grow…too chemical…if you use the same things intensive agriculture use why wasting time growing? If you go organic keep it like this all the way…

  3. 2 minute garden tips turned out to be over 4 minutes.
Someone needs a new watch lol

I use organic fertilizer (Epsoma for example) and add in some bone meal.

I do have some Hawaiian Bud-N-Bloom fertilizer but use that for flowers and not food.

All purpose is probably for non blooming bushes or trees.

  4. Garden Lime, Epsom Salt, Worm Castings, and Fish Fertilizer has enabled me to grow tons of Vegetables and give them away for FREE!

  5. Don't forget the important functions of Calcium and Magnesium which is not in the Miracle Gro.

  6. Would a water-soluble fertilizer with 12-55-6 ratio of N-P-K too much for tomatoes or other blooming vegetables? Thanks from Arizona

  7. I appreciate your knowledge.
I sat on the floor of a bookstore this past weekend with a pile of gardening books.
I’ve learned so much more from your videos than what I could glean from the books.
Thank you for sharing your gardening wisdom. 😊

  8. I never use miracle grow on anything but flowers and shrubs. It can change the taste of your fruits and vegetables.

  9. As a young gardener in my 20s, I used the only miracle gro on the shelf and had wonderful vegetable and flower gardens! I didn’t know anything about soil acidity and amending.
Over the years, it stopped being my go-to because soils are different across the U.S. and MG just didn’t work as it used to. My asparagus needs a 10-10-10, my local soil at our new house is a clay-sand mixture of a 7 alkalinity so I have to keep adding acid to make anything grow. I don’t know HOW the trees all grew here! We bought about 7 cy of dark soil for our raised beds and that, too, is between 7 and 8!
I thank you for these other options I haven’t run across!

  10. Never use any fertiliser that has pottasium chloride (aka murate of potash) in it, the chloride component is toxic and the plants will not take it up, pottasium sulphate is much better.
Also note that a plant never takes up P on its own, it uses the P by converting anything it needs into phophate component which it can uptake and loves, e.g. iron is converted to iron phosphate, Mg to magnseium phosphate. Hope that helps.

  11. The energy for the fruit production is made (or captured) in the leaves. I am a very long time Horticulturist. I can tell you this guy knows "0". He is just full of shit and all I can be thankful foe is he is not making 5 Minute Garden Tips. Plants and gardens have facts not Tips. Get a university soil test.
