Here Is the Full List of James Beard Awards 2023 Winners
Justin Pichetrungsi of Anajak Thai wins Best Chef California! Had the pleasure of eating here right after the Times named it best restaurant. Congrats, chef!
Also congrats to Margarita Manzke of Republique for Best Pastry Chef!

what is the deal with Anajak? i’ve been and it’s just expensive thai food. like really expensive. i can’t even remember what i had. It certainly wasn’t bad by any means, but why all the hype? i swear some smaller, less notable places around town have much more memorable dishes *sigh*

i said it on another post about the james beard awards a few weeks ago, but: with all due respect to republique’s very good dessert / bakery program (and i recognize how the james beard awards are, like many awards, deeply silly), hannah ziskin at quarter sheets was the story in 2022. she is still cranking out brand new and inventive desserts every week, and every single one is — at worst — great and delicious and — at best — transcendent.
