Who’s this little dude chilling in my garden? Friend or foe?

  1. That will be a beautiful Black Swallowtail butterfly. I plant Dill to purposely attract them.

Edit: They do eat dill, parsley, and such, so most would consider them foe. However they never do damage beyond the plant they were born on in my experience, and never come in great numbers. Sometimes having foe is a good thing for attracting and feeding the “friends”. Plus I think they’re one of the prettiest foes ever.

They don’t eat enough to cause damage to carrots. I always leave them be, they become a very beautiful butterfly.

I had an army of these. Are my dill down to nubs and moved on…. And the dill recovered, too, so, not a very dangerous enemy.

Technically a foe, but a cool one. Let him be. 👍

My fennel plants hosted a family of these guys earlier this spring. It’s a joy when you see their butterflies come back. Black swallowtail are beauties.

Plant extra parsley, dill whatever they like. I ran out of parsley one year & discovered they do not like grocery store parsley.
