  1. We are getting Rain FINALLY!!🎉🎉
I feel like I’m forgetting something. I just planted 65 day shelling beans yesterday and we are getting some cold bursts today. It’s been well over a month of no rain and extreme heat. It would be a great day to split up some flowers to transplant. Wonder if I still have time to plant sunflowers as birds nipped some.
A poplar is dropping leaves after they turned yellow and looks like fall in the garden. Everything has been held behind in growth with high heat and no rain.
I started broccoli in GH—it was hot. Some germinated and I put them shade cloth covered cooler patio, a few more sprouted and then the cool air and rain hit and I think they all sprouted. Test that they like cooler weather.
After this rain of close to an inch—Get ready to weed! Now if the garlic would pick it up I can get broccoli in. Had bad potato beetle problem and hand squishing wouldn’t do. I tried flour and soda, then horticultural oil and finally Captain Jack’s Spinosad stopped the madness. They laid eggs on onions! After freak frost, drought, heat and all other kinds of pressures imaginable I’ll be surprised if we get anything. Fish fertilizer called in coon and that was tricky to figure out in fenced in garden. We thought they were the new to us voles, but it was rutted up too much. I think it climbs up by wood compost bin. Yes, baby rabbits fit through 2×4 welded fencing and added chicken wire to bottom. The pressure gets any worse and I think solar electric fence is next. What a mess these critters cause. When your window of grows short and the crop is destroyed there is no time to start over in some crops.
The first time peanuts seem slow—we will see. Lol, I covered brassicas and looked inside and there was a moth. It was easy to catch inside netting😊. All the plants are different sizes because of ‘that frost’ and will be tricky at canning time.
Now that it rained I hope the pests look elsewhere.
I need to get some Kaolin Clay! I asked James Prigioni as he uses it a lot and if it would coat enough to prevent squash vine borer and he did a recent video on just that. He believes it would help. There has to be a good solution to SVBs as it’s soon that time right after Japanese Beetles show up and we have to get traps and bags ready as they Do help. We wouldn’t be able to go outside if we didn’t trap.
Hungry insects Ravaging was an understatement with those potato beetles!😂😂. Every hour was vital that I found a solution.
Definitely use a mask with diatomaceous earth. People use it in chicken pens, but I’m not sure that is a good thing.
Lol, aluminum foil we tried for SVB, but no luck. We end up doing surgery every year on susceptible varieties of squash and we learned to bury the vines further down to root. Covering won’t work as some come up from the ground. I have too many to inspect and like the potato beetles I have to find a way to prevent SVB.
For us Juicy Fruit was not a myth and nothing else was used. We twisted it and tucked inside tunnel. Next day it was on top of ground dead. We haven’t had moles in years because I used Milky Spore, but because in a drought wherever you water attracts them.
This crazy weather this year I’m seriously thinking of high dome gardening. And I may stop certain crops like strawberries and peas. It’s just too hot where I am. The peas take forever and the berries get baked and still need water after harvest. I will try fall peas if I have a prepped area and see if that’s better. The strawberries were the best in a self watering gutter planter we made, but they had to be lifted and set in ground to make the winter. If I could find away to prevent them from freezing I would go back to it—seriously it was the best. It’s equally as good as kiddie pool celery—hardly work at all.

  2. Coffee grounds keep many pests away including slugs….worth a try. It does work for me. It also feeds the worms which are great for fertilizer.

  3. I like your backsplash in the kitchen. Did you buy the tile from Floor and decor. I have installed that tile a few times. Doing showers and backsplashes.

  4. My zucchini plants have been going crazy recently! I’ve been harvesting about 4 to 5 good-sized zucchini’s every week and have been making all kinds of yummy recipes with them. I’m hoping the plants will last the rest of the season! 🥒🌿

  5. Toxoplasmosis is a worry, but why not get cats to predate on your rodents and other insectivores. And why aren't yours dog rodent hunters. My neighbor had a terrier that was avid for chasing away or catching the rodents and opossums. He even jumped the fence to chase them away over here.

  6. OMGosh, the chipmunks and rabbits are so bad here, too! Had to put collars around sunflowers.

  7. For chipmunks and mice you can use a bucket trap. To gallon bucket filled half way with water, and sun flower seed sprinkled on the surface. A little ramp too for easy access. Two years in a row I took out around 25 each year with this method. I literally have not seen a chipmunk this year.
