Salt Lick Driftwood, TX founded 1967 is only 15-minutes away. No fancy glass windows. Only caliche for unlimited parking, aka dirt. Prices about the same from any bbq up-start er, start-up in central Texas. No guacamole, no tortillas, no salsas, no Mexican rice and no tacos at Salt Lick. A plus, Valentina’s. Only boring coleslaw, potato salad, pinto beans for sides at Salt Lick. So there’s that. Go with the Salt Lick.

We ordered online once. After placing the order, the app said our order would be ready in 3 hours. @ Franklin’s at least you know the line moves once they open.

I can’t believe they closed the Menchaca location. Some of my fav breakfast tacos and now I’m guaranteed to probably never eat them again 🤣

If Valentina’s doesn’t figure this out, I don’t think they’ll last. I was going to go but after reading everything, which has been consistently terrible, it’s moved to the bottom of my list.

Bummer to see this but they have to figure it out. You can’t ask people to lose a whole day waiting for your food regardless of the quality.

Yo why no AC in main dining room? We wana eat GrassFed Briskest in AC!

I’m probably wrong but I think they felt they were being hugged to death in Austin and moved out there. I think they are actively trying to slow the business down to where they are not a tourist trap. I think they will get this figured out but they probably don’t know how to scale up to what the tourists are at yet. Crazy this is their first foray into the restaurant business and so successful at it.

I loved going to their Mencheca location. It was super close to my house, and they didn’t have that super insane Franklin wait time for awesome BBQ. As it stands I am not likely to go again, they should really just re open Menchaca. Waiting hours for a breakfast taco is insane.

This spot went down hill 4 years ago when City of Austin came down on them for back taxes. The family ran company became low wage employee company….portions became smaller and prices went u.

  11. I’ve had the food at their Manchaca location for years.

Prices have been going up exponentially to help pay for the owner’s coke habit. Food quality is decent, but they tend to just throw out a bunch of gimmicky food for their daily specials. Breakfast tacos are top-tier, though.

It was worth a 15 minute wait in the morning, or 30 minutes if you just HAD to have it. When the line was filled with tourists on the weekend, it was an easy skip.

I won’t be going there since they lied about not closing the other one. The BBQ is fine, not stellar and there are too many other decent places in Austin

So is the trailer closed for good then? I heard it was re-opening eventually.

There are FAR too many BBQ restaurants who putting out product that is just as good, if not better, that don’t cost you multiple hours of your time. Was happy to support them at Star Bar, then on Brodie. Manchaca tested my patience, but the Buda reviews make this a hard pass.

The reality is they have earned their name, so can call their shot. They’ll be fine…

But they’ll also lose that really cool, early-days, vibe where people feel in the know about the place that rivals Franklins with 1/10 of the wait.

Someone else will swoop in and take that role. Total bummer, but that’s life. Things move on and times change. Best to them and cheers to the new “under the radar” place coming.

Their food is incredible. I haven’t made time to get to the new location yet but I’m so excited to see them growing. I personally wouldn’t go on a holiday weekend because yes obviously it will be super busy.

  17. CriscoMelon

I took my little bro about a week ago, on a weekday, and we waited ~ 1.5 hours for 4 tacos. Of the 3 registers, 1 was being used. And yeah, it was busy, but only using 1 register is just ridiculous. And it seemed like there were more people walking around – the kitchen, the hallways, the dining area – than were actually working.
