Kinda boring tbh. Only 6 new 1-stars, no new 2 or 3 stars.
Will have to check out Heritage in Long Beach; they won a star and a green star.
Wish Kato would’ve gotten upgraded to 2; they’re doing some seriously fine dining stuff at their new location. Service is impeccable too. At least their cocktail program got recognition.

The Michelin guide is not a fan of LA. Dining here is not focused on formality, service, or aesthetics enough to snag Michelin stars.
I’ve eaten at Le Bernardin, which has three stars and is widely considered one of the top 5 restaurants in the world. I’ve also had many meals at Mariscos Chente, which has never had any stars. Chente is literally 1/10 the price but I would gladly trade my evening at Le Bernardin for just one more plate of Chente’s pescado zarandeado. I don’t care that Chente’s bathroom is gross as fuck. That fish was everything.

California has too much hood tendencies. There are a few gems out there, but too many places want to charge premium prices for ok food and horrible service. FOH makes or breaks restaurants. And in most cases, they break. Most workers can’t see that the real people they’re hurting with shitty service and bad attitude are the chefs and cooks.

Michelin has a hard-on for high end Japanese in this city and almost nothing else.

God, so many narrow minded comments. Yes, it’s narrow-minded for you to say “Michelin doesn’t get LA.” Why should it? It’s a fucking French travel guide. Michelin has their perspective, it’s the readers job to understand what lens Michelin uses to see the world. The entire point of the Michelin guide is that it has very consistent and specific judging criteria. You know those criteria are the same when it judges Villas Tacos or when it judges Arpege. Michelin’s job is to inform readers that their expectations are met when they go to a starred restaurant.
I love LA dining, I love that it doesn’t bow down at the altar of michelin stars. I love that we have our own vibe, casualness, lack of stuffiness. Relish in that, don’t fret about a hoity toity French travel guide originally designed to encourage French people to drive more doesn’t give really rate the LA restaurant scene very well. Be confident in what you like, and don’t seek the validation. LA won’t ever have a billion stars, despite having excellent food, and that’s fine, we don’t jump through the hoops required to get a billion stars.

Not much exciting news with respect to Los Angeles, but I didn’t really think there was anything/much wrong with their ratings last year. Just glad to have the Guide back and motivating more and more LA restaurants to strive of excellence.

Bourdain made it his mission to make Michelin a household name for the culinary critique world. As much as it is a high standard, the pedestal they’re on seems so manipulated and manufactured to the benefit of Michelin and its ilk alone.

Here’s a Google Maps list I made of all the 2023 Michelin starred restaurants in Califonia. I find it easier to browse all the restaurants in Google Maps. Let me know if you find it useful!

I haven’t seen this posted anywhere but it looks like after one year Hatchet Hall lost its Michelin star.
