I was curious today, ahead of solidifying my meal selections for next week’s box, what the cost comparison is and if it’s even worth it to continue.

It’s not.

We have to make gluten-free meals because 3/5 of my family have celiac or gluten intolerance . So all the ingredients with wheat get donated or pitched, anyway. Even with including extra ingredients for a 5th serving, and the gluten-free ingredients, my grocery store cost was half the box price! That’s even for full bottles of sauces, bread crumbs, etc. I did have quite a few ingredients called for – seasonings, gluten-free versions of pastas, but even so, I wouldn’t have doubled my cost on those.

So, now my decision is do I flat out cancel, or keep skipping shipments to get meal ideas since we do like the meals most of the time. If I had time I would import all our favorite recipes into my recipe management app (Whisk). What I really need is just to have someone plan my meals for me & create shopping lists. I like to cook, just not the meal planning and grocery shopping!

… and this is why HF is significantly marked up. Many, many people are the same way.

If you cancel, there’s a decent chance they’ll send you a discount code to come back. Keep that in mind.

With those dietary needs and swapping out ingredients because of it, it’s probably not worth it for you. 2 things to think about: you don’t need a subscription to see the menus and you should consider looking at other services for one that handles your particular needs better. There are also apps or programs which help with meal planning
