I’m experiencing the same symptoms of the heat wave with my squash and cucumber plants. I ordered the wrong size shade cloth so despite having shade cloth over the top, I’ll be using sheets temporarily on the sides of my raised planter. Thanks for your good advice for fertilizers. Stay cool everyone! 🥰
Yeah in Southern California…i need to get shade cloths.Great tip
My garden is getting there lol
The climate crisis is no joke. The cost of food will go through the roof as it becomes harder and harder to grow anything. Flowers drop off and bees don’t come out to pollinate. All we backyard gardeners can do is care for our plants (thanks for this video) and hope for the best.
I use shade cloth and it's great. But even with all that I have, it's not enough. Here's a tip for those with a certain type of space: I use drip to get water into the soil, but I use a big sprinkler to just cool things off. This can run in short intervals, and the upside (happy plants) is better than the downside (potential for disease). If you have agricultural water this is an option!
We’ve been at 104+ for a while but tomorrow it’ll be 95! Who knew I’d be looking forward to 95 for a day. Shade cloth is a normal summer curtain in Texas
My biggest threat to my garden this year is 🐀 rats
Ive been watering everyday and its so hard, but so far everythings been ok. But the cucumbers are done, lol. Luckily we had a two day lower temp break that gave everything a heat stroke break (including me!) in the upper 80s and now we're back in the 100s with more Bill Gates aggressive mosquitos the only time of day I can water.
I killed two new cucumber plants this week. I try to not overwater because there will be rain in the forecast and then I come home and it didn’t rain. And every time I kick myself for not watering.
CaliKim I'm sorry to hear your area has had such long sustained high heat. We're extremely fortunate here in the PNW with one day over 90 so far. But that could change in a heartbeat and I'm prepared to raise the shade cloth, thank you for this reminder. Please all of you stay inside ride it out and stay hydrated, stay safe.
,"Cali Kim" 👉 👍
We have been VERY lucky here in the SF Bay Area on the Peninsula. Our temps have been just about perfect, so the garden keeps chugging along. Hope you get some cooler days soon!
Its been 100-105+ in Texas for a month. Between the heat, pest and critters most of my plants didn't make it. I'm preparing for fall at this point. The few that are alive I'm having to water daily. They are in containers.
We live in the South. The heatwave lasts as long as it lasts. For us, I know that some things won't survive.
Hey, Cali! We are getting ready to have a heatwave here in Southern Indiana. My pumpkin plants are growing and flowering well for right now. The plants get full sun in the morning until about midafternoon. Luckily our neighbor behind us has giant black oak trees which will shade my plants during the hottest part of the day around 2:00-3:00pm.
Hi Kim, Do you ever set yourself up with an overhead misting system that kicks out a fine mist, not a stream or a spray? There is a segment of the population running around all about climate change and warming climates. I reserve comment for another page. However, 100+ degree temperatures do arise from time to time, perhaps more often in the modern cycle. Just curious on your thoughts of overhead misting in addition to drip. -Bob…
Keeping temporary shade cloth is challenging with the monsoon winds in AZ. Damage control is done in small increments to avoid heat exhaustion and sunstroke. Challenging time for gardening. Hoping to do better during our monsoon gardening season.
