$23 for 3 tacos and a Horchata(cup was equivalent to half a child’s juice box)
Meat was flavorful
Portions were a joke
Salsas tasted like they came from a jar

Literally just bookmarked this place 15 mins ago. So, not good?

Dude I’m so disappointed in this place. Massive fan of the NYC locations but this one sucks. The prices and portions are hilarious as you mentioned, but my biggest first world grievance is the salsa. In New York, each table has a bottle of salsa. At this one, they have them sitting out in the open in giant bowls with self serve ladles, which is really cool because it means you get a bottleneck of people carrying these big ass red trays waiting in line trying to not drop everything while they scoop salsa. The chips are also prepackaged bullshit like get out of here drop some tortillas in a fryer or go away.

There’s like 57 other Mexican places in the west loop right now and they all blow this one out of the water. Sad!

The bar for a $6 taco is high, and this isn’t it

Just go to Taqueria Chingon for those prices, and get some kickass and good looking tacos

I found Bodega across the street to be much better. I wasn’t expecting Bodega to be as good as it is. Tacombi was a letdown when we went this past weekend, especially when there’s an identical concept across the street that does it better

Just go to Tacotlan on Fullerton and Kildare

  6. I went to Tacombi last week for the first time. This photo is accurate however, I am surprised by the reviews. Their pricing is on par or lower than most places with the same serving sizes. This is a street taco. They are small. This one is $6 but they range in pricing from $4-$6. The quality was great.

It is also cheaper than Bodega for whoever tried to compare. Bodega is a night club- their focus isn’t food and it shows.

Okay I’m sorry – I moved here from NYC a year ago and the only time I have ever felt embarrassed to be a Chicagoan is when I saw a line outside Tacombi on its opening night.

It is by far the most mediocre New York export we’ve received. New Yorkers don’t even like the place – it’s a “shit I need a reservation for an eight person birthday dinner tomorrow and haven’t booked anywhere” restaurant there.

It’s especially embarrassing for a city like Chicago to be lining up for this, when the Mexican food here on balance is miles better than New York.

For the record I am a huge Levain fan – so I’m not opposed to New York exports. I’m just opposed to this one. Let’s stop debasing ourselves.

This place sucks had a similar experience but even smaller portion sizes

Million places in the area that blow this spot out of the water. They are taking advantage of customers at that price. It’s okay to charge $6 for a superior product, however the appearance and narrative tell another story. The going rate is $4 for a steak taco at most places, and you shouldn’t have a hard time finding a top notch taco at that price in Chicago.

  10. browsingtheproduce

That’s a $4 taco max. Does the extra $2 come with a kiss on the mouth?

This place pisses me off for some reason and I haven’t even been. Seems like it’s trying so hard and price gouging bc “west loop”. We need less of this in Chicago!

  12. Diplomatic_Victory

This is a bummer – feel like I’m turning into the Grandpa Simpson of Fulton Market seeing how fast trends are jammed down our throats. I miss Perez’s…

In case anyone is curious where to get a taco in FM we now have:

    + La Josie
    + Cruz Blanca
    + Bodega
    + Texan Taco
    + Federales
    + Bar Takito
    + Tacombi
    + Tabu
    + Velvet Taco
    + Lena Brava
    + Fora
    + Lil Amaru
+ Taco Bell Cantina (not complaining about this)

  13. This is disgusting and disrespectful to any real Mexican

The west loop has an important place in the Chicago food scene, but if you’re eating tacos in the west loop (let alone for $6), you’re doing it wrong.

Just ate there tonight and we actually really liked it. A bit overpriced, but very goof flavors. Guac was a generous scoop, drinks were good and there were drink deals before 7:00. It was packed and everyone seemed to be having a good time. Ambiance was fun and staff was really friendly. We live close by, and this is one of the few “taco” joints we would go back to again.

God dude the quality of just fucking shit people in this city are willing to put on a plate is insane. And the number of people willing to eat it is also insane. Unless there is some crazy aging or marination process done to the meat or something no taco on earth is worth more than $4.
