1999 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese
Tasted in zalto universal and gabriel gold
Nose: very complex – lemon, honey, clementine, tangerine, lime, slate, herbs, mint, spice, potpourri, anise, tea. Extreme clarity in nose.
Palate: clementine, lemon-lime, honey, key lime pie, cream, ripe melon. Concentrated and amazing purity of fruit, without being cloyingly sweet. Zingy and prickly acidity that provides tension, pulling you in all 3 dimensions.
Finish: insanely long, lingers with pure lemon-lime, and a refreshing herbaceousness. No harsh edges, no bitterness, no heat – just so pure…
Incredible balance of acidity and residual sugar. This is what Pradikatswein riesling is all about. The incredible balance between acid and sugar, simultaneously mouthcoating and concentrated, yet effortlessly lightweight.
If I had to critique it, wish it had more minerality. As complex as it was, I feel like it was lacking a final dimension to truly push it towards perfection. Also, despite the age, it tasted actually quite young. If blinded I might say <15 yrs. I want to taste this again in a decade or two. Oh yea, not the best QPR either.
