Is this an example of a “service fee”?

A bit different because it’s actually gratuity. I don’t know how I feel about this because I would normally leave like 18-20% for dine in so 15% is less… but then mandatory tips get charged sales tax.

No, it’s a gratuity, and since it’s stated as such then legally they have to give it to the staff

Different from a “service fee” where there’s no obligation

There’s always the chance someone’s breaking rules but of course that can happen anywhere with anything when it comes to restaurants

I don’t think this counts. Plus you see it ahead of ordering. And if they only want 15% then the better. This way I don’t feel guilty if I don’t add any more tip. Unless the waiter was great the. I would add some.

    This is different.

    1. It’s explicitly stated as a gratuity.
    2. It’s disclosed quite prominently before you order.

My favorite AYCE Korean BBQ place has signs of “14% gratuity added” all over the restaurant, including the entrance door.

    You can’t miss it.

This is how it should be done, if it has to be done.

The irony is that they don’t accept tips in Japan

We DO NOT have to add them to the list.
