IF you’re in the New England area, you probably know that most stone fruit (and some apples) were effected by a combination of the Feb deep freeze and the late May frost. That means no local peaches, cherries(there were some sour cherries) or plums. I was somewhat upset by the lack of plums, since I make a spiced plum jam to eat in my oatmeal every day and haven’t found a sub I like. I’d been beating the bushes for prune plums and coming up empty when a friend tipped me off that Stop and shop had US grown Italian prune plums for $1.99 a pound. Dear reader, I have been to 3 locations and bought them out of their plums. If anyone else out there is in need, don’t forget to try the local supermarket…just not the ones near me 😉

I’m 4 batches in and planing at least another 2.

I go to the farm stand and fruit wholesaler by us and buy an entire box every third year or so. Last one cost me $30 (2020, I think) and had nearly 40 pounds of plums in it. I’m sure it would cost $50-60 now but I filled 12 quart jars with plums, made 4 batches of jam, and froze about 12 lbs of the halved plums for later.
