    With the popularity of places like Lasita and Kuya Lord; I wanted to showcase an OG of the Filipino local cuisine that tends to go under the radar over here.

    LA Rose Cafe in Hollywood has been around for a long time and features some of the best traditional Filipino cuisine here in LA.

    1. Cebuchon – this is the Cebu style roasted lechon and one of my all time favorite pork dishes here in LA. It’s always got crispy skin and wonderfully juicy pork at the bottom. It’s melt in your mouth texture makes me roll my eyes every time I eat it.

    2. Their sizzling sisig is a delicious mix of pork belly, pig ears and other pork parts with peppers, onions, etc. Always a good way to start the meal.

    3. Liempo – this is their bbq style pork and was super tasty and juicy.

    4. You can’t have Filipino food without garlic rice. It’s simply a sin.

    Other dishes worth checking out that we didn’t eat: kare kare (an oxtail and peanut based stew), crispy pata (fried pork shoulder, it’s heavy but delicious), tocino (more of a breakfast item but their tocino has a wonderful glaze and flavor to it).

    In total I believe this cost us around $70-80. Admittedly Filipino food is not cheap but it’s delicious and filling!

    That sisig and atchara looks good! A market here in Pasadena used to make amazing sisig then they completely changed it; super vinegary and almost soupy.

  3. It’s very good! I also had the cebuchon and sisig. And empanada, lumpia, and chicken adobo, which were excellent.

    There was also a dude playing piano the whole time. Old and new pop songs. He was awesome.

    Be careful the bathroom door is janky. Also nested behind a couple other doors starting with the Hollywood sign door, so it’s a bit confusing to find.

    Love this place. Their arroz caldo is also really good. They also sell their hot sauce by the bottle. It’s really good if you like vinegar based sauces.

    Thanks for the reminder — I haven’t had Filipino food this year. Need to hit up a turo-turo nearby me asap (I’m not paying $20++ for a plate of chopped pork belly.)

    one of the only filipino restaurants i will eat out at. being part filipino myself, i will typically just cook any filipino food i’m craving. and i’m not a fan of the gentrified, “upscale” filipino food that has been coming out lately. if other people are, more power to them, but i love the traditional flavors of the food, and LA Rose Cafe delivers.

    Dined solo there about 5 years ago and I STILL think of how enchanting this place was. The piano player, the decor, the prices (maybe have changed but I doubt it), the quality… the friendliness of the entire staff? It’s not a d!ck swingin hot spot, it’s just plain old good. God bless Rose

    Before quarantine, Filipino fast food was gaining in popularity. It lost a lot of momentum since then. I hope it catches on again.

    I did kamayan dinner here for and it was really fun. I like the tito boy that runs this place and he lets you byob.

    Their Kare Kare and Sinigang were perfect to me and took me straight back to my childhood like Ratatouille. so comforting ☺️

  13. How is their Halo Halo? I have never had it but want to try it. I have seen mixed reviews on it at this place. Thoughts?
