Anybody that has ever gone into a Publix and feasted upon any of their chicken subs knows full well just how surprisingly good their tenders are. I had no idea Nashville hot chicken was even on the menu until I saw a recent post on here and as a purveyor of all things spicy, this was a must try. Worst case, I get to enjoy their great chicken even if it’s not at all spicy. Win-win baby!

After the first couple bites, the heat was just ever-so present, like a slightly warm towel on the face. It’s there, but also kind of not. The cheese was their spicy gouda, which added some mild peppery and cheddar tang to the sub. I think provolone would have been a better choice though, something a little bit sharper. Chicken was good as always, although it most certainly was on the dry side. Thankfully, Publix includes a couple dips to go with the sub and one of them was their Buffalo sauce. Zesty!

Buffalo sauce aside, and it was good to be fair, the chicken sub itself was akin to Wendy’s spicy chicken sandwich, maaaaaybe slightly hotter. This is supposed to be Nashville HOT chicken! Where’s the heat? I ranked it as barely a 3 on the heat scale, which was very disappointing. Of course it should be noted that I still ate the whole thing within a few minutes thanks to the buffalo sauce. It’s a decent 4 from me and would have rated much higher had there been some actual spice and maybe a different cheese next time.
