Maybe Neapolitans or Sicilians can claim this as their own, but I had the best fried calamari in Rome (see photo) in the humble seaside neighborhood of Ostia. Crispy on the outside soft on the inside. Not gummy. Not too salty. And made perfect with a dash of lemon. Washed down with some chilled Frascati. Where did you have your best fried calamari?
