I store an extra tank in my outdoor steel shed. I head a hissing when I opened the door this evening. My spare tank had ice over one side and was leaking propane. I pulled it from the shed and stuck it in the middle of the yard. The escaping propane is from a pin hole leak at the weld line.

What do I do? Wait it out? Stick it in the pool?

My friend suggested using my lighter for a better look. But fool me twice…

Any help would be appreciated.

You could always grab the welder and put a quick tack weld on there to close it up

AmeriGas? I just refilled a tank of theirs at my UHaul (great price btw) and I’m on my patio and i still smell a smigde of gas. Dude checked date on this swap-em tank and said all was ok. I check the screw and it was tight.

Makes me want to buy ‘forever tanks’ that I never swap out for a full one at a 7-11 or whatever.

Edit- I’d wait it out if no ignition source near

A 20lb tank like that is good for 12 yrs. Date of manufacture is stamped on the collar. After that they need to be pressure checked. If they’re still good they get another stamp on the collar with the date it was done. Good for a few more yrs after that.
My guess is the company that does the exchanges cut corners, didn’t check the bottle properly. Again, just a guess. Contact corporate of the company doing the exchange. Not the place of business you got it from.

Just wait it out. I suppose you could put it in the swimming pool but then I sure would not swim in that. But also the propane is just going to bubble up and escape into the air regardless. Would prevent fire from getting back to the tank if something did ignite anything in the air. There’s not really any way you can fix that tank or at least until the propane’s gone. Put it in the middle of the yard and as long as there’s no ignition sources nearby you should be fine. Even then if it’s leaking really slowly and it’s in the open it shouldn’t concentrate too much.
