East Hampton Clam Chowder
RECIPE COURTESY OF INA GARTEN
Level: Easy
Total: 1 hr 5 min
Prep: 20 min
Cook: 45 min
Yield: 6 to 8 servings
Ingredients
12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, divided
2 cups chopped yellow onions (2 onions)
2 cups medium-diced celery (4 stalks)
2 cups medium-diced carrots (6 carrots)
4 cups peeled medium-diced boiling potatoes (8 potatoes)
1 1/2 teaspoons minced fresh thyme leaves (1/2 teaspoon dried)
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 quart (4 cups) clam juice
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2 cups milk
3 cups chopped fresh chowder clams (1 1/2 pounds shucked clams)
Directions
Melt 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) of the butter in a large heavy-bottomed stockpot. Add the onions and cook over medium-low heat for 10 minutes, or until translucent. Add the celery, carrots, potatoes, thyme, salt, and pepper and saute for 10 more minutes. Add the clam juice, bring to a boil, and simmer, uncovered, until the vegetables are tender, about 20 minutes.
In a small pot, melt the remaining 8 tablespoons of butter and whisk in the flour. Cook over very low heat for 3 minutes, stirring constantly. Whisk in a cup of the hot broth and then pour this mixture back into the cooked vegetables. Simmer for a few minutes until the broth is thickened.
Add the milk and clams and heat gently for a few minutes to cook the clams. Taste for salt and pepper. Serve hot.

I love watching Ina. She’s my favorite cook
You can't go wrong with Ina's recipes you can tell she worked in the industry catering to people's likes.
Oh my oh my oh my…the most simplest of recipes u can come across yet so delicious! Packed with flavor! Love how the video was straight to the point. My family enjoyed this recipe very much. Thank u Ina!
I made this tonight, turned out pretty good, I missed the bacon though:)
Que nojo
I know she lives in East Hampton, but for those of us that don't where do we get fresh clams & fresh clam juice?
Straight forward no nonsense instructions. Love how you don't waste time. Refreshing! Thank you!
I never imagined this being so fast and simple… guess what I'm cooking today? 😋
Love homemade clay chowder!
This the only recipe I use! It is so good. Thank you Ina💞
I am new to cooking and I will try this recipe.
head to your nearest supermarket for fresh clam juice! It's always available! You never have to use the canned stuff.
Can it be put in the freezer for another day? And how do you store fresh thyme

No diced bacon? Yikes!
Is there a recipe for the "Clam Juice" ?
Made this tonight with fresh clams! One tip add the warm milk to the roux instead of the chowder water.
I love torturing myself watching this videos
Roux is too dark.
Thanks Ina, I'm 66 yr. old bachelor and have never made this, but you make it look so easy and chunky the way I like it! Soon in a bowl near me! Lol
nice
Finally someone who knows how to make clam chowder. No canned clams!🤮. Thanks a bunch. From Rhode Island, so I’ve been making it this way for 40 years.😋
Made this exactly as her instructions and it came out just fabulous. How good is that?
I live in New England. No carrots.
I am offended she chopped the black bits out of her clams.
Old Bay!
Love how her cook !! 😊
I can't possibly be the only one who thinks Ina is sexy.
WHO WANTS CHOWDA?!
Can you cook this in the crockpot?
My dad used to make fun of her weight
Every time when I make soup I must review this particular video again and again and again 😅😂
I made this chowder and OMG!!! I never knew chowder could taste this good. I'm definitely going to make it again and again and again. This is my go to recipe from now on. Thank you!! 🤗❤
Ina is always so confident and serene in her approach that she imparts those qualities to us… Plus, she really is the face of New England's amazing cuisine. Her recipes are consistently spot on as well.
I made this for Thanksgiving and it was delicious! Thank you Ina.
This is the best clam chowder recipe I've ever seen! Thank you so much for sharing your talent. 💞
Suppose to use the cream, not milk for the chowder.
I kind of tried this version last night, but thyme and celery is not available so minus that. I'm sure it would have tasted better with those two. And, I didn't use too much butter, enemy of my PCOS. 😅
Clam juice = clam blood
"East Hampton Clam Chowder" Okay, sure, Ina. lol
❤️❤️❤️👏
Well looks delicious I got a try this I hope I can make it good like you😋💕
❤❤❤😮😮😮😸😽😁
Bacon? Clam juice? I'm sure it's good but, really?
Help? Either Ina or Guarnaschelli posted a Hampton's chowder with a segment of the show highlighting frozen and fresh chopped and whole clams that are available commercially – it appears – on L.I.. Ina tore open a container without showing the retailer/vendor name. I'm almost certain it may have been Alex that now removed the video and replaced with a Food Network version using fresh clams. Anyone?
Oh my goodness yes but I know you’re a great cook I’m sure your clam chowder would be delicious I got to try this I’ve only had clam chowder a couple of times and I absolutely love it is my favorite the best I ever had was at Olive Garden and we had that one time or maybe twice anyway it was so delicious I’ll never forget it I got to try this thanks for the recipe🥰💕👍😁💕
Delicious and easy to make .Thank you Ina
CHOWDAH… ps that's too thick. needs a cup of water.
