16- ounce package of fresh Okra Pods, rinsed, dried, and slices into 1/4″ to 1/2″ pieces. Set aside.

1-1/2 cups self-rising cornmeal

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1 cup whole buttermilk or milk

1 egg, slightly beaten

1 tablespoon water

Vegetable oil for frying (Canola or Peanut oil maybe used)

1. In a medium mixing bowl; add buttermilk, egg & water. Whisk until well blended. Set aside.

2. Add cornmeal, flour, salt, & pepper to a 1-gallon plastic bag. Shake until dry ingredients are well blended. Set aside.

3. Submerge sliced Okra into buttermilk mixture. Soak for 5 minutes.

4. With slotted spoon remove 8-10 slices of okra, at a time, until well drain. Add okra pieces into cornmeal mixture. Shake until okra is well coated. Transfer okra to cooling rack. Continue until all the okra is coated.

5. In a 12″-skillet, over medium-heat, add vegetable oil until 1/2″ deep. Heat oil to 375 degrees F. (If OKRA is frying too fast, remove your skillet off the heat & reduce heat to medium-low). An electric skillet or deep-fryer maybe used. Add 1 piece of coated okra to oil. If oil sizzles around the edges of okra continue to add okra. Be sure not to over crowd your okra. Fry okra until golden in color.

6. Drain fried Okra on paper towels.

7. Serve warm. Add your favorite dip(s), if you wish!!

TIPS: Keep FRIED OKRA warm in an 175 degrees F. oven for up to 30 minutes.

  1. I don't like eating batter. Don't like anything cooked in oil. Batter absorbs oil. I fry my okra with out batter in butter until golden brown and put on paper towel. Just another way to cook okra. 😊

  2. I fry fish, no batter. Bake fish, no batter. People in America are getting FAT even me. Changing my eating habits.

  3. If you can't find self-rising corn meal, you can make it. Mix the following;
2 cups Aunt Jemima's cornmeal (its more finely ground)
    1/2 cup all purpose flour
    2-1/2 TBSP baking powder
    3/4 tsp table salt

  4. First time ever making okra I don’t like it but my husband loves okra! Hopefully he’ll love this! Thanks a bunch. I’ll update ya on how he likes it!

  5. If i do this business, how many days does it live in the container or how many days does it expire?

  6. Would you show us how to make cream corn. I am from the South and have never been able to make it taste as good as my relatives.

  7. I'm definitely will try this when harvesting my okra. I'm from Canada and I d' never heard about okras. Ordered okra (Clemson variety) seeds more adapted to our cold climate. When I saw what it was afterward, I mean, the slime part, I almost fainted… lol! But I'm ready to try it because it's an healthy food and I'm sure it taste good. Thank's for the recipie.

  8. Oak-ra paaads… dang girl can tell you ain’t from the south. You make a simple thing too complicated.

  9. Looks good but I like mine fried more to get the inside crunchy too! Better than popcorn for watching movies!

  10. Yummy with Ranch Dressing!!!!
Hmmm, I wonder how it would taste with some hot sauce added to the batter……..🤔
