Tons of sediment so the decanting came in handy. Aromas of blue and black fruit as the bottle is being emptied into the decanter, telltale signs of a great Spanish garnacha. Almost perfume like, distinctive yet delicate. The color is a beautiful garnet / ruby that is almost barolo like under strong light. So far from the aroma and appearance, the signs of aging are subtle. On the palette, blue and black fruit upfront which turns to a perfect meld of black fruit, salinity (fish sauce?), a bit of cedar with a short-medium finish of tart black cherry. Supple, great lightweight mouthfeel that still manages to stay full bodied (in no small part aided by the 14.6% abv) Really well integrated acidity, tannins and alcohol, which makes the odd cast of flavors shine together.

FYI, for this producer, 2002 was a blend of 45% Grenache (87 yo vines), 30% Carignan (97 yo vines) and 25% Cab Sauv (no reference to vine age).

Excited to try the 2001 Priorat from the same producer which I picked up tonight as well. A fairly different varietal blend from the 2002 and was supposed to have been a much better vintage as well.

This was ~$45 at Chambers St wines in NYC, since they got it at cost from a customer’s private selection. I picked up the two bottles they had but would highly recommend swinging by the store if you’re in the NYC area, and not just for the free champagne tastings on Wednesday nights.
