Recipe here: http://www.joyofbaking.com/AppleCrisp.html Stephanie Jaworski of Joyofbaking.com demonstrates how to make an Apple Crisp. Apple crisp belongs to a long line of simple baked desserts that combine fresh fruit with a topping. Cobblers, Crumbles, Grunts, Brown Bettys, Pandowdies, and Crisps may be called old-fashioned and homey but having a dessert of warm baked fruit topped with a tasty crust is hard to resist. Unlike a cobbler that uses a biscuit dough topping, this Apple Crisp uses a streusel-like mixture of flour, white and brown sugars, ground cinnamon, and butter, along with rolled oats and nuts.

  3. I find it easier to melt the butter before adding.  This way it's easy to do by hand.  Also, I add some cornflour to the apple mixture before baking to thicken the juices.  There are so many different crisp, crumble and brown betty recipes out there.  Apparently some people call this a brown betty, but I understood those to be made with breadcrumbs.

  4. Hi Stephanie,
Can I replace more flour with rolled oats instead? If can, what's the maximum amount I can replace the flour with?

  5. Hi Stephanie, I love your recipes and I have often baking… With this Apple Crisp, I can't imagine how much apple is need as you say 6 cups ( or 1.2 L). So how can I convert into pound/lb ?

  6. Great recipe Stephanie I am going to try fro may family for 4 of July 2015.Thanks so much for all your time you teach us how to do yummy recipes.I am hoping a wonderful day and happy 4 of July.

  8. Thank you! I have just started baking at home. I cook, but I'm not really a baker, thanks to your great videos, I'm begin g to bake. 😉

  9. This is my go-to recipe for apple crisp. I've made it at least a dozen times. It's so easy (and tasty). Other apple crisp recipes require macerating the apples. Once you've made apple crisp this way, you'll realize that step is totally unnecessary.

I think the lemon is optional. I've made it both with and without and I'm not sure I can taste the difference. My guess would be that lemons keep it fresh longer. It lasts 3-4 days after baking without the lemon, maybe longer (we usually finish it in 2 days).

I like it for breakfast (w/o ice cream or whipped cream) so I'll usually prep it the night before and refrigerate it overnight. It takes about 10 minutes longer to cook from that temperature.

I usually add the oats to the food processor last – after I've blended the other ingredients. That way the oats are more intact in the final crisp.

The unbaked topping can be refrigerated on it's own for at least a week. I frequently use half of it on a couple apples in a small cake tin, and save the remaining topping for the next weekend. I've also used this topping on peaches. It's a little too sweet for most people on peaches, but I loved it!

I can't say enough good things about this recipe!

  10. how far in advance would you recommend making this? Same day would be ideal but we are traveling for Thanksgiving and I need to make in advance. Thanks.

  14. I made this crumble following this recipe. It is delicious but because of using food processor everything got crumbled, I would have preferred the chopped pieces of pecan crunch and oat to be visible. Then i come to watch your other videos for the same apple crisp and i liked how you used pastry cutter and mixed everything by your hand, never mind next time I’ll use that technique.😊

  15. I had a lot of juice from the apples after baking. I used a rectangle shaped pyrex pan. My apples were pretty deep. Can you cut the apples to small maybe ? I used honey crisp apples, maybe they had higher juice content. I had made this recipe on a 9×13 pan last time and didnt have a lot of juice on the bottom after removing a few servings. Still tasted great, ill just drain it off maybe and refridgerate.
