I know I’ll never fully agree with these, but having Don Alfonso, Canoe, and Vela over places like Alo and Edulis is nuts.

  1. I think there was a similar list last year, Eater doesn’t have offices in Canada anymore. The list was outsourced to a freelance journalist who seems to be local to Toronto. I remember doing the same look-up on the writer last year.

Roti Hut is def not a pick I would have on this list.

Found the last time this was posted – 2 yrs ago actually. https://www.reddit.com/r/FoodToronto/comments/s7zwh4/eater_the_38_essential_toronto_restaurants_where/ The link just goes to the latest 38, so the original listing from 2 yrs ago isn’t on here anymore.

Burger Drop is good but also very over rated.

Love Beach Hill is on the list. Love their brisket.

Interesting list with some unique spots not often recognized

  4. I didn’t initially think the was too bad, since I don’t have high expeditions for lists, but is it ever laughable at how obvious the author’s tastes and networks/friends are.

Including both Sunny’s and Mimi’s is absolutely hilarious and even more laughable that she snuck in a chef’s line of pies in a list of “essential restaurants”

It’s pretty obvious the author lives a “Toronto Life” sort of life and does the lip service to diversity. I wonder if they’d even try Som Tum Jinda if there wasn’t some Michelin association.

Le Sélect? It wasn’t in the Eater 38 when it was gloriously good, but now that it’s a shadow of its former self… it now is?

I thought eater stopped doing a Toronto list years ago

Who is Tiffany Leigh? Corey Mintz used to do these. Recommending Madras Masala, which is fine but unremarkable, suggests a downtown bias. Dunno about some of them. Must be a tough gig though – you have to pick a representative sampling. Nice to see Wonton Hut on there.
