I’d check out Yum Sະlut in Chinatown
This was one of the dishes that made me a Lacha Somtum convert. I can’t express how strongly I recommend this choice without sounding like I’m threatening you. Make sure you get a somtum (papaya salad) and the fried larb to go with.
One note, some places make Lao Steak with beef. If that’s what you’re looking for, I still push Lacha Somtum, just order the Nam Tok.
Which restaurant in Sacramento?
Not really a big Laotian population here. You’ll have to travel to places like Sac and Fresno.
Not many Laos down in LA. The only Lao restaurant I have been to in LA is in the SFV at Kop Jai Lai.
However many Northern Thai dishes are actually originated from Laos like papaya salad, khao soi, and sao kua so in LA, your best bet would probably to be find a northern thai/ Issan thai restaurant.
What is the Lao restaurant you went to in Sac? Let me know since I’ll be up there in a few weeks lol
If you come to oc, some Laotian spots:
Royal King Elephant

Nok’s Kitchen https://yelp.to/xWDkrSCbxI
Vientiane Lao Thai https://yelp.to/OJTeU0sdVI
All excellent. If you’re gonna drink then RKE is the way. Lots of esoteric drinking foods.
