I’ve seen red bananas at loblaws from time to time. Also mini bananas. Apple bananas, I’ve only seen and eaten in Hawaii. The rest, no clue.

  2. I have seen some at Indian stores in Scarborough.

  3. I’ve bought red bananas and mysore before at T&T on Grand Park in Mississauga

Goldfingers and Mysore bananas are sometimes available at Indian stores (usually South Indian stores) and Sri Lankan stores. Sometimes, you’ll fine Manzanos there instead – depending on what got shipped in. The red ones *very* rarely also show up at those stores.

Now I need to travel to find those blue bananas!

I think I bought Manzano at my local food basics once a couple years ago. They dried out before they softened, and tasted extremely underripe (compared to “normal” Cavendish banana). Are any of these varietals preferable to the Cavendish somehow? I’m not trying to put them down, I’m very interested but have been disappointed once before!

I don’t think these ship well, even if you find them they won’t taste the same.

Also the blue java is absolutely edited to hell and back, they’re more like a pale green with a cyan undertone.

The smaller bananas are available sometimes at Nations. They were great the one time I got them – very slightly tart.

The Cavendish is the bog standard grocery store banana, for now (there’s a blight that could completely wipe them out if it spreads).

Little banana trivia, artificial banana flavour is based on the Gros Michael which used to be the most popular type. That’s why it tastes different than normal (Cavendish) bananas.

I recommend Nations, Ample, Kai Wei, Hua Sheng for Manzano, Goldfinger and Mysore

Loblaws ususally has Manzano and Red bananas… or at least my Loblaws does. Got some Manzanos a while back and while tasty they were a total pain in the ass to peel. They looked ripe but the skin was tough and did not peel evenly. No thanks.
