My fiancée and I happened to walk in when a photographer was taking photos for this list, happy to see it!

I had it a couple months ago and want to go back. The food is good for what it is, a gas station restaurant, but don’t expect to be blown away. Honestly surprised it made it to NYT list; I didn’t read it but my guess is that it made the cut bc it’s unique and difficult to find less common cuisines here in Austin (relative to say NYC, SF or LA). I’d compare it to eating your Malaysian friend’s mom’s cooking and I mean that in the best way possible. (I actually watched them prepare our dishes and the rendang and rice was kept in multiple domestic (ie not commercial) slow cookers and the rice cookers)
I had the beef rendang, the seafood curry laksa and the steamed dumplings. The rendang was great but I will skip the seafood curry and dumplings next time.
Prices are a bit high and portions are adequate (there were 2 of us); believe we spent over $50-55 for all that incl tip (note: it’s counter service, no table service).

I tried it and reviewed it but never posted on reddit. So it’s located inside a shell gas station and they have a american chinese food menu and a Malaysian menu. You have to order from their Malaysian menu to get the full experience. I got the nasi lemak with anchovies and Beef rendang. the rendang was 18.99 for a decent sized portion of short ribs. i’ve had nasi lemak before and it’s usually wrapped in pandan Leaves. The one here was good, if i had any feedback the rice was too mushy. The rendang was good but I’ve had a friend cook me a much better one aka (eats n noods). For what it’s worth I do agree with previous commentor that i’m surprised they made the list. Personally, i kinda like Yenis. She made better similar food at times. She does indonesian fusion but makes beef rendang or other similar dishes as specials. But i’m glad a mom and pop made the list! You can probably find a malaysian mom or home cook making better food but Wees is an excellent choice if you don’t mind going to campus.

Goddammit now they’re gonna be constantly slammed and running out of food
But seriously, good for them. I adore these kitchens that pop up in random places (like convenience stores) to serve comfy meals (RIP Chicken Lollypop).

Beef rendang was really fucking good. But the wait time was a bit crazy — more than 90 mins on a weekday early evening.
