A pick-me-up from this streak of rainy days: Ice cream from Surreal Creamery (Kips Bay), “It’s My birthday”/Strawberry Ice cream, and Taro/Matcha ice cream mason jars.

**What** is it: All photos were of their Mason Jar Ice Cream (a 16 fl oz mason jar), with soft serve ice cream. Photos 1 & 2 were of their “It’s my Birthday” ice cream, which has soft serve strawberry ice cream, strawberry syrup, fruity pebbles, and rainbow sprinkles/jimmies. Photos 3 & 4 were a custom/make your own option, where I’ve went with: taro & matcha swirl ice cream, topped with Lucky Charms cereal, marshmallow puff, waffle cookies, and condensed milk. Had plenty of water bottles (4) as drinks (*very* parched), those were 1,50$. The two ice cream jars were 11,25$ each (or 24,50$ after tax). Tipped more than the two ice creams combined (around 40-50$, I forgot, half cash/half CC) after I’ve finished, and show appreciation since business was very slow. They also do their ice creams in cup/cones, or as milkshakes, even Floteas (Ice cream + Boba Tea).

**When** was this: Three days ago (Friday, 22 September 2023) early evening (6:05 to 6:30Pm) after walking around for about an hour in Midtown from the West Village. All of the other ice cream spots I’ve liked/wanted to go to were full and/or crowded. Gelateria Gentile (8th Ave/W 4th St) was full, didn’t want Van Leeuwen this time, Anita Gelato (Broadway/W 26th St) was full w/ a line stretching out, Grace Street which I’ve wanted to go to originally, Angelina Gelateria, and Sweet Churros (5th Ave/W 32nd St) were all full too, so I’ve walked to Surreal Creamery (2nd Ave/E 30th st), but I did have my eyes on Kaylee’s Creamery nearby too if possible. I’m pretty familiar with Surreal Creamery since they have another location in Greenwich Village, 3 in New Jersey (Ridgewood, New Brunswick, Westwood), and 2-3 in Philadelphia, so for a small chain, looks like they’re doing alright, even if peak season for ice cream’s is just about over. Aside from some high school aged students stopping by for pickup orders, an elderly woman wanting hot tea, and 2 couples also wanting pickup orders, it was pretty quiet, so I was at peace to take photos & enjoy (most of) this.

**Where** is this: [Surreal Creamery](https://www.surrealcreamery.com/), in Kips Bay, Manhattan. Small, Asian-inspired ice cream & bubble tea chain across 5 states, with locations in New York City (Greenwich Village is the other spot), New Jersey (Ridgewood, Westwood, New Brunswick), Pennsylvania (3 in Philly, one slightly outside that), Delaware, and Texas. This location in NYC opened around June 2020. If you’re into the whole Instagram-able ice cream options, you’re in luck. At least speaking for their Kips Bay location, it’s a bit out of the way for getting there, but if you’re in the mood for creative ice cream that’s open late (depending on the day, they close until 11PM-1AM), you’re in luck here. No seating outdoors or indoors, so if you do decide to eat and/or snap photos, you’ll have to do so standing. See more at: **[Their Menu](https://store.surrealcreamery.com/?location=11ea9c580ffc2134bf640cc47a2ae3c4)** where you can see Mason Jars, cones + Floteas, boba/bubble teas, milkshakes. **[Surreal Creamery’s Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/surrealcreamery/?hl=en)** and their **[TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/@surrealcreamery?lang=en)**.

**Why** did you go here & snap photos this occasion: Last day of summer came and went, but I was in the mood for ice cream after my haircut in the West Village so I was roaming around the area for ice cream that I would’ve been happy with, not crowded inside or out, and not “too” expensive, to name a few. About 2 miles of walking, plenty of other ice cream shops & 40 minutes later, went with them. Wrote down my choices on my notepad (I always write down my orders beforehand + helps for memory sake), and yeah, *maybe* I shouldn’t have handed the cashier that since she worked on both of them simultaneously, but then again, I’d understood why after all – time is money. The ice cream tasted pretty alright, creamy texture, colors were bold, the toppings were decent for what you’d expect w/ shops like these, and yeah, one mason jar or cone’s all you need for yourself. Felt one of those days where you’d want to relax, kick back (not really here), and let the day roll by. Finished all of the strawberry one, took around half the taro/matcha one home. Said thanks to the employees + left tip before leaving, but I did feel a bit remorseful they’d have to stay there until late night if its sleepy inside inside, even come home around 1AM (one of the workers live in the Bronx for example). Maybe something I’d want to do again, but on the other hand, nothing wrong with doing local/small businesses for ice cream.

**Gear used**: Sony A7R IV camera, 90mm f/2,8 G macro lens, x1 Lume Cube Light Panel mini w/ a SmallRig mini tripod as a makeshift light stand. Used my Apple Watch as remote shutter.
