Took a weekend trip to LA and tried out these places for the first time. Here’s what I thought:

Apollonia’s Pizzeria – Got there close to closing so they no longer had individual slices. Got the square pie with burrata and hot honey and it was excellent. Crust was very crispy and light. Burrata was great but I didn’t care much for the honey. A little on the salty side but other than that it was great. Wish I could’ve tried their round slice 8.5/10

Brothers Cousins Tacos – Went to the one on Sawtelle/National. Tacos were a little on the small side but good amount of meat. Salsas were good but nothing amazing. Jamaica was delicious. 7/10

Eataly – Been wanting to check this place out for the longest. Ate at La Pizza & La Pasta. Carbonara was excellent as well as the Tagliatelle allá bolognese. Arancini was disappointing. Was bland and tiny portion for $19. Coffee Gelato downstairs was amazing. 7.5/10

Going back in about a month to the Glendale area. Let me know what I should try next.

If you’re going to Glendale you gotta hit up Zhengyalov Hatz

for glendale, i recommend mini-kabob (either the combo plate or lamb chops, with the pear soda) and fish king (the orange roughy and some poke). zhengyalov hatz is a good option for something smaller / lighter.

and maybe start the day with a pastry at proof in nearby atwater village

i don’t even know why apollonia’s sells those square slices, they are salty trash. it’s only their ny style that is good.

I’m not from glendale but will visit fish king in glendale if I’m nearby. I do like their poke. And the cooked foods are great too

Bacio di latte > Eataly for Gelato. It’s in the mall

In Glendale you can order the less familiar Cuban food items at PORTOS BAKERY to try them out like the potato balls are great and there are other similar items that are ham filled or cheese filled that can make a nice small breakfast or lunch appetizer

There are two large sides of the restaurant and you can order from either side the same menu and in between is the beverage bar where you separately pick up your beverages

there are lines there, all the time, including weekdays, but the lines move faster than you would imagine so don’t let them deter you

another place I highly recommend is PANDA INN— this is the more sophisticated version of Panda Express which came later and is all fast food, but it’s original parent restaurant offers gourmet Chinese dishes that are wonderful

My Glendale recs would be Raffi’s Place, Viking Pizza, Rockbird, Damon’s and Foxy’s for the old school vibes. Bub & Grandmas is a fantastic bakery/lunch counter nearby. Nearby tasty Italian would be Ouvo in Pasadena or Hippo in Highland Park. Chicos in HP for old school Mexican.

Definitely recommend the Brothers Cousins burritos with the seared cheese next time. You can add your own toppings and they wrap it up for you!

It’s a fine taco stand, but the wait and Brothers Cousins is unjustifiable for almost any food. It’s very good taco stand el-pastor, lengua, and asada. Take your pick on the others, but there are so many other stands with equally good good that don’t require a 45 minute pre-order queue.

El Sauz tacos are some of the best in the city
