
Brand new to the sub. But I figured there’s no better place to ask. My neighbor gifted me a couple cans of pickles he made after I baked some sourdough for him. When I opened The cans they didn’t have that distinctive pop and under the lid looks kind of gnarly. I’m assuming they didn’t actually do the canning process very well. Should I even eat these or show them to my neighbor?
Also the pickles looked extremely mushy, is that related to this canning fail or perhaps did he just cook the living daylights out of them. They don’t look remotely crunchy for pickles.

Safe if they stayed sealed and you used a tested recipe. Ignore the throw it all away just in case crowd.
Supposed to be that way? No… but this is the current state of canning supplies.
Based on the information you’ve provided, I personally would not feel comfortable eating them. Doubly so since you don’t know how they were canned to begin with.
