A friend recommended Tteobokki to me and bought me some cheesy ones, however im not very good with super spicy, i can handle mild but thats about it. However every recipe i look up calls for it to be spicy. Is there a more mild way or even a sweeter sauce than i can use to make the rice cakes?

Edit: Thank you everyone so much! it looks like i’ll have to buy more tteok to make all these recipes lol

Edit2: it turns out the ones i have are wheat flour cakes stuffed with cheese, im not sure if these should be prepared differently, https://yourimageshare.com/ib/qXUkjLlftM these are the ones i have? Advice?

You can use jjajang sauce instead of the usual tteokbokki sauce, it’s delicious

Gungjung tteokbokki, or soy sauce rice cakes

When using the recipe, use less gochujang and gochugaru. These ingredients can be added on in steps with tastings in between to see if it suits you. Additional sugar can be added as you desire as well.

A lot of Korean dishes can be varied to people’s taste as long as the fundamentals are there.

Gungjung-tteokbokki is non-spicy! Also, tteokbokki places also offer fusion versions with tomato sauce, cream (alfredo/carbonara?) sauce, jjajang sauce, curry sauce, etc.

I just grill them on the grill, serve wirh grilled green onions and a simple dipping sauce. Chewy and delicious!

You can also add cream or milk to tteokbokki and make rose tteokbokki which is trending in Korea. Korean grocery stores also have bulgogi or galbi marinade which is a mild sweet sauce that you can also add if you don’t want any heat.

In Busan, we had a Creamy Carbonara Tteokbokki and couldnt want to replicate it when we flew back home. The recipe on The Subversive Table was very good.

You can buy sliced rice cakes and add them to soups and stews! It works great in place of rice, especially if you’re a person who dumps their rice in their jjigae anyway 😅

Jjajang teokbokki. Soy sauce base is good too.

I love it as a snack – steam them until soft, sauté them in a pan with some butter until they’re crispy, and then drizzle honey on top. My mom used to make this for us growing up – one of my favorite snacks!
