I’ve loved Kamboat Bakery on Bowery for many of their pastries, but my favorite and most decadent was always the “butter sweet plain bun” or as the [internet](https://www.sandwichtribunal.com/2020/06/boh-loh-yao-hong-kongs-pineapple-bun/) has told me it’s called, boh loh yao (apologies for the typo in the post title). It’s essentially a pineapple bun sandwich with a piece of cold salted butter as the filling.
Now that Kamboat has unfortunately closed its doors, is there anywhere else y’all might know of that sells these? I’ve been in other Chinatown bakeries and haven’t been able to spot them—any leads would be appreciated!

Cuppa Tea and Sing Choi Kee, both in Tangram Mall in Flushing. Cuppa Tea has a second location in LIC.
Cuppa Tea’s is solid I guess? Who doesn’t love a slab of butter in a sweet, buttery bun? Haven’t tried Sing Choi Kee.
You may be looking in the wrong place- they’re not as common in chinese bakeries as they are in cha chaan tengs or 茶餐廳; the google maps search term is “Hong Kong Style Fast Food Restaurant”. Apparently Mabu Cafe has them, Kong Sihk Tong might have them (?). I’ve only been to the latter but haven’t had buttered pineapple buns there.
Hope this helps!
I actually see these in bakeries all the time? But I grew up eating these so maybe my pineapple bun radar is more honed, haha.
Ho Wan Bakery a mere two blocks away from Kam Boat (RIP) has great ones, and they’re cheap. I love buying them and stuffing them with butter at home. I’m pretty sure Deluxe Food Market has them too.
All the best bakeries in Chinatown are gone. I still mourn Lung Moon and its egg tarts.. 😭
if you wanted a fancy version, potluck club has bolo bau toast with milk tea butter.
Lol the typo in the title can also be read as big butt
The bakery in Sunset Park across the street from iFresh Supermarket has these! It’s next to Jooy Tea, Ng’s Kitchen, and the Soccer Bar.
