These are Wild Planet Smoked Mackerel Fillets in Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
Ingredients: Smoked mackerel (Scomber japonicus or Scomber colias), organic extra virgin olive oil, water, sea salt
Their mackerel is harvested in the North Atlantic Ocean and the Eastern Pacific Ocean, working with well-managed fisheries in Morocco and Ecuador that practice sustainable harvesting of targeted free-swimming schools of mackerel.
I still do not know why Wild Planet adds water to their cans that promote EVOO on the front of their box. The only reason has to be to cut down on cost. These were still over $5 at Whole Foods.
I am passionate about and enjoy almost every canned fish I have tasted. Except these. This has to be the worst can of fish I have ever eaten. The fish was extremely dry and it tasted like burnt toast. Extremely bitter. The buttery taste of Mackerel was never detected. Just awful.
Wild Planet Foods is the first large-scale sustainably focused seafood company. Wild Planet strives to transform fishing into a force to reinvigorate the oceans for future generations. To do this, Wild Planet works with like minded small-scale fishermen who follow 100% sustainable fishing practices for every product they source. Their products are minimally processed to deliver unparalleled taste and quality consumers can trust.
