Hi all! Hoping for some identification help! I went to a Korean food hall (CoArk) in Denver a little while ago and ordered kimbap that came with a cup of this ridiculously good soup. It had kind of a peppery gravy flavor. The menu didn’t say anywhere what the soup was and google hasnt helped. I’ve since moved out of the area and would love to have it again. Any suggestions? It looked like miso soup but wasn’t like a miso soup I’ve ever had.

It looks like a fish cake soup just without fish cake. It is usually seasoned with finely ground black pepper and garnished with sliced green onions. A lot of kimbap places serve it with their menus as a complimentary item.

The flavor of the soup is from dried Korean anchovies, kelp, radish, the white parts of green onions, and fish cake.
Sometimes the broth is also seasoned with soy sauce or katsuo udon sauce.
